Aitana Bonmati

Aitana Bonmatí is the player to watch at this year's Women's Euros. The 26-year-old Barcelona midfielder has been in scintillating form, earning back-to-back Ballon d'Or Féminin awards in 2023 and 2024. Her performances were pivotal in Spain's triumph at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, where she was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.

Tournament history

The UEFA Women’s European Championship began in 1984 with just four teams. As the competition grew, Germany emerged as the dominant force, lifting six titles in a row between 1995 and 2013. Along the way, icons such as Birgit Prinz, Kelly Smith, and Alexia Putellas have left their mark on the tournament.

The Women’s Euros has become a stage not just for great football, but for cultural change, pride, and progress. The FA revealed in 2024 that 129,000 more girls have become involved in football at school since Euro 2022.

Current Holders

England are the current holders after winning in 2022. Beating Germany 2–1 after extra time with goals from Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly. Winning their first European Championship title and the first time a senior England side has won a major football tournament since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. It was played in front of 87,192 people at Wembley a record for a men's or women's EURO finals match.
