Atlético Madrid 2–1 Fulham - a.e.t.(2010)
In 2009 the UEFA Cup was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League, that years final held in Hamburg was Atlético Madrid vs Fulham. Fulham, the surprise package of the tournament, had defied all odds to reach their first-ever European final, defeating Juventus along the way.
Atlético Madrid took the lead in the 32nd minute through a composed finish from Diego Forlán, but Fulham responded just five minutes later, with Simon Davies volleying in an equalizer to level the match. With the score locked at 1–1 after 90 minutes, the game headed into extra time. As penalties loomed, Forlán struck again in the 116th minute with a decisive close-range finish, breaking Fulham hearts and sealing a 2–1 victory for Atlético. The win marked the Spanish club’s first major European trophy since 1962 and cemented Diego Forlán’s status as one of the most clutch forwards of his generation. For Fulham, though they came up short, their remarkable run remains one of the greatest underdog stories in modern European football.
Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen (2024)
The 2024 UEFA Europa League Final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, held at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on May 22, 2024, delivered a twist to one of European football’s most talked-about seasons. Bayer Leverkusen arrived in the final unbeaten in all competitions, having made history by going invincible in the Bundesliga, and were heavily favoured to lift their first European trophy since 1988.
However, Ademola Lookman produced a performance for the ages, scoring a sensational hat-trick to fire Atalanta to a 3–0 victory. The club’s first major European title. In doing so, Lookman became the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since Jupp Heynckes in the 1975 UEFA Cup Final. Defeat in the Europa League final was Leverkusen only defeat in 53 games.
Chelsea 4–1 Arsenal (2019)
The 2019 UEFA Europa League Final between Chelsea and Arsenal, held in Baku, Azerbaijan on May 29, 2019, was a high-stakes all-English showdown. After a tense and goalless first half, the match exploded into life after the break. Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock with a diving header against his former club, before Pedro and Eden Hazard added two more, putting Chelsea 3–0 up in devastating fashion. Though Alex Iwobi briefly gave Arsenal hope with a thunderous volley to make it 3–1, Hazard quickly extinguished it with his second goal of the night, sealing a 4–1 win for Chelsea.
The match marked a fairytale farewell for Eden Hazard, who was instrumental in the victory, later confirmed it would be his final game for the club before joining Real Madrid. It also secured Chelsea’s second Europa League title, while leaving Arsenal to face the disappointment of missing out on Champions League football for another season.
