Certain designs that are released in the build up to a World Cup are inevitably less popular than other, this Spain away shirt fit precisely in that category before being written into football shirt folklore thanks to its victorious appearance in Spain's first World Cup triumph.
We know what you’re thinking, but hear us out. The concept for this first of it's kind Africa Unity Puma shirt, released prior to the World Cup in South Africa, was for the 12 African national teams manufactured by Puma to unite behind the same third kit and raise awareness of the importance of environmental issues in the continent. The first unified continental kit came complete with iron on badges for each nation, meaning it was completely customisable (years before this become a football shirt trend). The brown and blue fade design symbolises the African sky and soil and if that wasn't enough it came housed in a wooden box, which quite literally roared upon opening.
Who will ever forget the Barca masterclass at Wembley to win a second Champions League crown under Pep Guardiola, the memories of Villa, Messi and co dazzling Manchester United in this design which featured the bold addition of a yellow collar and sleeve cuffs in a departure from previous home shirt colours?
The burgundy and gold colours compliment a detailed flamboyant motif for Lyon’s 60th anniversary away shirt, part of a range of daring Adidas designs which appeared in Ligue 1 around this time and since attained modern classic status.
Corinthians anniversary 3rd shirt is another example of a rare anniversary design. Worn by the likes of Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos Nike claimed the design represented the clubs warrior spirit, with historic references captured magnificently in a shirt full of fine detailing.
The second Adidas Ligue 1 shirt to feature, the Marseille third shirt incorporated African influences to create a design symbolising the city of Marseilles fight against racism. This was one of the first player issue Adidas releases to incorporate the ultra fitted Techfit technology.
Adidas got it right with their second effort at a black Germany away shirt, a slick design oozing elegance with subtle use of red fabrics and gold transfers and a badge design influenced by the crest worn at Euro 1996. Southampton got everything right on their 125th anniversary home kit. The shirt was part of the 'Tailored by Umbro' range and featured an iconic red sash, the design was free from commercial sponsorship after chairman Nicola Cortese decided to 'give the shirt back to the fans' as part of the celebration. A painstaking design process and marketing campaign culminated with the jersey being released at exactly 11.25am in the club shop.
Inter were so happy with this design they wore it on the pitch to celebrate their 09-10 Serie A triumph! The shirt features the historic Milanese Biscione symbol down the left side housed on an otherwise classic Nike round neck minimalist design.
