Leeds United fan Arne Flatin is based in Ulsteinvik on the Northwest coast of Norway close to Aalesund. He has supported Leeds since the 70s and has since collected an impressive amount of their best ever shirts.

Why do you collect Leeds United shirts?

I’ve supported Leeds United since 1975, as a kid I was fascinated by the all white kits on the the black and white tv, we had just won the league and reached the European Cup final. My heroes were Peter Lorimer and Duncan McKenzie, that Christmas I got a 1975 Leeds Home shirt and the next year I got our Yellow Admiral Away shirt, there was no looking back from there!

I also collect IL Hødd shirts, they are my local team here in Norway and currently play in the third division and I have a number of International shirts from over the years along with shirts that have designs that have caught my attention over the years.

How many shirts do you have in your collection?

I currently have over 800 shirts! Over 100 of these are Leeds shirts, over 50 are Hødd shirts and the rest of them are a mix from all over the world!

What was your first ever shirt?

My Leeds United Home shirt I got in 1975 and the away the year after were the first shirts I owned but it wasn’t part of a collection. I only began to really focus on collecting in the early 1990’s, I discovered Soccer Scene in London, I’ve been buying shirts regularly ever since!

What is your favourite shirt and why is it special?

The blue England 3rd shirt from 1990 has always been a special shirt for me.

A few years ago I was conducting interviews after a game between Molde and Viking (I work for Norwegian Broadcasting Company – NRK) the managers at the time were now Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Åge Hareide. We spoke for a while after the interviews about the shirt and we all agreed that it is a true classic!

Here I am wearing it with a friend of mine in London, I visit every year. On my last visit we both went to the Classic Football Shirt London shop, I bought 30 shirts!

What is the shirt you would like most in your collection?

There are a few Leeds shirts that I still want to add to my collection, the 1981-84 home shirt with the Systime sponsor and the WGK sponsored 1984-85 home shirt. I also still need to get our more recent 1995-96 Thistle Hotels Yellow third shirt, it was never made available to the public and was only ever worn once vs Port Vale in the FA Cup. They’ve all proven to be hard to track down so far!

Do you have any interesting stories from collecting shirts?

Last Summer I put on an exhibition of some of my collection, I displayed over 150 shirts over three days, it went down really well!

I also play old boys football twice a week and try to wear a different shirt each session, it’s always fun deciding on which shirt to wear and seeing the responses each time we play!
