The Bruised Banana

Few shirts have earned folklore status quite like Arsenal's 1991-93 away kit. The all-over geometric print was worn through a run that included the League and FA Cup double, with a lethal Ian Wright up front. The shirt that's still everywhere on matchday, decades on.

However, the Bruised Banana wasn't exclusive to Arsenal. The pattern was worn by Romania in a bespoke red version against Sweden ahead of USA '94, while River Plate, Spartak Moscow, Czechoslovakia's youth sides and German club Tus Koblenz all wore variants of the same template. Liverpool even trialled a purple prototype that never saw the pitch.

adidas have paid homage to it once before, on Arsenal's 2019-20 away shirt in their first year back making the club's kits. For 2026-27, as Premier League champions, Arsenal and adidas have gone back to the source, this time in a new dark navy colourway that keeps the print and stripe proportions as close to the 1991-93 original as possible.
