Expectations were high for Chelsea when they looked to strengthen their squad with club-record summer signing Romelu Lukaku joining for £97.5 million as they attempt to put the pressure on Premier League champions Manchester City. They started the season well wrapping up the European Super Cup with victory over Villareal on penalties. Unfortunately, the London-based side's early form dipped and they were soon out of the running for a league title and with a quarter-final Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid, the FA Cup was Chelsea's last hope of domestic success. The side suffered an agonising penalty shoot-out loss to Liverpool in the final to end the season in disappointment.
