This commemorative design was worn in the build-up to an emotional World Cup qualifying clash with Chile which ended 1-1. Argentina had applied for permission to wear this version throughout the whole game, but its use was limited by FIFA to the pre-match lineups only. In this era, La Albiceste would later win their first piece of silverware since 1993 with a dramatic Copa América triumph, vanquishing pre-tournament favourites Brazil 1-0 in the final thanks to a deft Ángel Di María finish
