After a promising second-half comeback against Sweden and a hard earned victory against co-hosts Ukraine, England qualified as group winners. England faced Italy in the Round of 16 which saw a dominant display from the Azzuri, yet England managed to hold out for penalties. Andrea Pirlo's infamous panenka past Joe Hart was a sign of things to come as Ashley Cole and Ashley Young missed their respective penalties to send England home early.
