The 2009-10 campaign was a season of near-miss and individual brilliance for Melbourne Victory. The Big V, led by manager Ernie Merrick, secured a strong 2nd-place finish in the A-League Premiership but suffered heartbreak in the Grand Final, losing to rivals Sydney FC 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The star of the season was the brilliant Costa Rican attacking midfielder Carlos Hernández, whose 13 goals and electrifying performances earned him the prestigious Johnny Warren Medal (Player of the Year) and the club's Golden Boot. Despite this domestic success, the club struggled in the AFC Champions League, finishing bottom of their group, but the season is remembered for Hernández's stunning form and the passionate home crowds.
