Rafa Benítez went into the campaign full of high expectation's in Europe only for the club to finish 3rd in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League following a 2-1 defeat to Fiorentina in the final group match. The reds ultimately dropped into the UEFA Europa League and managed to reach the semi-final against Atletico Madrid. After a 1-0 victory to Atleti in the first leg, Liverpool led 2-0 in the second at Anfield only for former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán to clinch a crucial away goal that sent Los Colchoneros into the final. This season saw the curtain tail of Rafa Benítez's 6 year tenure at the club.
