The 2008-09 campaign was a devastating one for Crewe Alexandra as The Railwaymen spectacularly finished 22nd in League One, resulting in a painful relegation to the fourth tier, League Two. The season was defined by turmoil, including a mid-season managerial change from Steve Holland to Gudjon Thordarson, as the club struggled to arrest a worrying slide. This year marked a painful end to a long era for the club, culminating in the drop from League One.
