Goals from Peter Crouch (5) and Michael Owen (4) throughout the Group stage looked to bolster England's hopes of qualification. However, after two disappointing defeats to Croatia and two draws to Macedonia and Israel respectively, the Three Lions crashed out of qualifying and missed out on their first major international tournament since the 1994 USA World Cup.
