Notes - Home shirt as worn when Klinsmann managed the side to a 3rd place finish in their home World Cup. There was great optimism around Germany for the home World Cup and the squad responded by topping Group A with 3 wins from 3. Die Mannschaft then came up against Sweden in the Round of 16, with two early goals from Lukas Podolski enough to see Klinsmanns side through to face Argentina at the Olympiastadion in Berlin in the Quarter Finals. The tie was a tense matchup with Roberto Ayala putting the Argentines 1-0 up in the 49th minute before Miroslav Klose levelled the scores in the 80th minute to give the Germans hope. The tie would finish level after 90 minutes and extra time and the Germans were once again reliable from the penalty spot, with all 4 takers scoring while Roberto Ayala and Esteban Cambiasso missed for Argentina. The Semi-Final would be as far as Klinsmanns men would make it as they came up against eventual winners Italy who won 2-0 after extra time thanks to late goals from Grosso and Del Piero, with Germany having to settle for a 3rd place finish after beating Portugal 3-1
