The 2005-06 campaign was a season of dramatic mid-season turnaround for Plymouth Argyle in the Championship. After a poor start, The Pilgrims replaced manager Bobby Williamson with Tony Pulis, who immediately imposed his trademark style of a rigid, hard-to-beat defense, which finished as one of the best in the league. This defensive solidity steered the club away from relegation to a safe 14th-place finish. Leading the charge and finishing as the top scorer was homegrown hero Paul Wotton, whose 8 crucial goals, many from trademark penalties and free-kicks, proved vital in a season that was also his testimonial year.
