The 2005-06 campaign delivered a deeply frustrating season for Atlético Madrid, with Los Colchoneros finishing 10th in La Liga despite the high expectations that followed the appointment of manager Carlos Bianchi. The attack was shouldered almost entirely by their talismanic captain, Fernando Torres, whose 13 league goals were a bright spot in a team built on a strong, low-conceding defense. While a sensational five-game winning streak in the second half of the season included the impressive feat of 'doing the double' over reigning champions Barcelona, the overall inconsistency and a coaching change ultimately defined the underwhelming mid-table finish, which did, however, mark the arrival of 18-year-old talent Sergio Agüero.
