Wales managed a respectable 2nd place to Italy in Group 9 of Euro 2004 Qualifying, finishing on 13 points which saw them reach the play-offs. Wales were handed a stern test, facing Russia in the play-offs and it would prove a step too far as a Vadim Evseev goal in the 21st minute would prove decisive and see Russia qualify for Euro 2004
