The 2002-03 campaign was a season of soaring ambition and near-miss for Inter Milan, as the Nerazzurri surged to a close 2nd-place finish in Serie A and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Leading the charge was the talismanic forward Christian Vieri, whose 24 league goals earned him the coveted Capocannoniere title. The season, which featured the arrivals of Hernán Crespo and Fabio Cannavaro, was ultimately defined by the dramatic "Derby della Madonnina" loss to rivals AC Milan in the Champions League semi-finals on away goals. Despite the heartbreak of finishing as Serie A runners-up to Juventus, Vieri's Golden Boot and the deep European run marked a defining chapter of a highly competitive and memorable season under manager Héctor Cúper.
