The 2001-02 campaign was a season of dramatic dichotomy for Aston Villa. The Villans started strong enough to briefly top the Premier League table in October, but a mid-season slump saw manager John Gregory resign before club legend Graham Taylor returned to steady the ship. Taylor ultimately guided the side to a respectable 8th-place finish and secured their status as winners of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Leading the charge were the powerful young English forward Darius Vassell and the clinical Colombian striker Juan Pablo Ángel, both netting 12 crucial league goals. It was a turbulent year that ensured a seventh successive top-ten finish and remains memorable for the unexpected cup silverware.
