The Gunners topped their group, losing just once to Shakhtar Donetsk, pipping Lazio to the top spot after winning 2-0 at Highbury and drawing 1-1 in Rome. Arsenal found the 2nd group stage slightly more difficult, finishing 2nd with 8 points thanks to wins over Lyon and Spartak Moscow and home draws with Bayern Munich and Lyon. The Gunners faced Valencia in the Quarter-Finals and started off well with a 2-1 home win thanks to goals from Thierry Henry and Ray Parlour. However the Spanish side won 1-0 at the Estadio Mestalla, knocking the Gunners out on away goals
