The 2000-01 campaign delivered a turbulent season for Lens, with Les Sang et Or finishing a disappointing 14th in Division 1, their lowest ranking since 1991-92. Despite the mid-table struggle and early exits in the domestic cups, the season was defined by the breakthrough of young Senegalese forward El Hadji Diouf, whose 8 crucial league goals foreshadowed the incredible talent that would soon lead him to superstardom. It was a crucial transitional year that, despite the league position, provided the foundation for the club's dramatic runner-up finish the following season.
