Germany were drawn alongside Portugal, Romania and England in Group A but could only manage a 1-1 draw with Romania thanks to a 28th minute Mehmet Scholl goal, the only goal the side would score at the tournament. Manager Erich Ribbeck resigned after the calamitous showing at the tournament and holds the worst record of any German national team manager with 10 wins, 6 draws and 8 defeats to his name
