Notes - Very rare player shirt believed to have been worn by Thompson for the FA Cup Quarter Final match against Newcastle United, played at Prenton Park on 20th February 2000. Rovers had dispatched West Ham, Sunderland and Fulham to make it this far in the competition and now faced the might of Bobby Robson's Toon. The visitors raced into an early lead through Gary Speed and doubled their advantage through Didier Domi, but Tranmere cut the deficit just before half time thanks to Wayne Allison's header. The Magpies restored their two goal cushion after the break before Gary Jones pulled one back from close range to ensure a nervy finish. However, Rovers couldn't find an all important equaliser, final score 3-2 to Newcastle. Thompson would feature as a substitute in the final minute. After playing over 400 games for Wolves, he moved to Rovers in 1997 to become a regular figure in the starting 11. His game time was limited in the 1999 season, making 10 only appearances to help Tranmere secure a respectable 13th place finish in First Division. The Mersyside outfit also reached the League Cup final where they lost of to Leicester.
