This was the first meeting between the sides in the group, which saw The White Wings lose out 1-0 in a hard-fought match with Gary McAllister's penalty in the 49th minute separating the teams. Shtanyuk played the full game, and featured in all but one of the side's qualification matches as they finished bottom of the group with only 4 points. The defender earned 71 caps for his country between 1995-2007, whilst also having a spell as captain of the national team. He spent the majority of his club career in Russia with Dynamo Moscow, but also had spells abroad with the likes of Stoke City
