United managed to keep hold of highly sought after centre back Rio Ferdinand despite endless rumours about a prospective move to a bigger club and centre forward John Hartson developed into one of the most deadly strikers in the league, scoring 24 goals in all competitions for the Hammers. Harry Redknapp’s men missed out on UEFA Cup qualification by just one point but the Hammers faithful couldn’t complain with the improvements seen on the previous campaign
