The match was being played in tribute to Tottenham midfielder David Howells for his testimonial. The Italians ran out 2-0 winners on the day thanks to goals from Kanchelskis and Oliveria himself in front some 15,000 fans, many of whom had flocked to the ground to see Tottenham's new summers signings Ginola and Ferdinand in action for the first time as well as to pay tribute to long-standing midfielder Howells. Fiorentina wore their away kit for this match with Spurs opting to sport their navy-coloured away kit as opposed to the usual white home strip, this is believed to have been a spare shirt prepared ahead of the game. Oliveria went on to feature 33 times in the league for the side this campaign during his second season in Florence. This also happened to be his most prolific as he found the net 15 times, helping the side qualifying for the UEFA Cup with a 5th place finish. The skillful attacker made over 115 appearances and scored 28 times between 1996-99, before moving to Cagliari. The striker also earned 31 caps for the Belgian national side between 1992-99 scoring 7 goals.
