Home shirt as worn by the Mariners during a period of mixed fortune for the club. The 1996/97 season ended in agony for the coastal club as they suffered relegation from the English First Division, finishing 22nd only two points from safety. Alan Buckley was brought in to bring the club straight back up, succeding in this via the play-offs after beating Fulham and then Northampton in the final. The side also claimed the Football League Trophy
