The 1996-97 campaign delivered a turbulent season of transition for Blackburn Rovers as Rovers slumped to a 13th-place finish in the Premier League, their lowest since returning to the elite. The season was fundamentally defined by the world-record sale of talismanic striker Alan Shearer, which led to manager Ray Harford's early departure with the team bottom of the table after a disastrous winless start. Caretaker boss Tony Parkes, however, admirably steered the team to safety, anchored by the crucial goalscoring of striker Chris Sutton, whose 11 league goals proved vital in a campaign built on resilience and the sheer grit required to avoid disaster.. The 1997-98 campaign saw Blackburn Rovers emerge as genuine title contenders under manager Roy Hodgson, climbing as high as 2nd place and remaining within the top seven all season. Spearheading the charge was the magnificent Chris Sutton, whose 18 league goals earned him a share of the Premier League Golden Boot, a spectacular return to form that was an incredible highlight of the year. Despite fading in the second half of the season, their final 6th-place finish was a testament to their domestic consistency and secured a coveted spot in the UEFA Cup, marking a successful return to European football for the club.
