Home shirt as worn when Jörg Berger was replaced by Huub Stevens as the side finished 12th in the Bundesliga but managed to claim the UEFA Cup after beating Inter Milan on penalties in Milan. Marc Wilmots top scored for the side with just 6 league goals as the side scored just 35 goals all season. The UEFA Cup Final was a tense affair with both home teams winning each leg 1-0, the side couldn’t be separated after extra time in Milan. Iván Zamorano and Aron Winter both missed their penalties and after all 3 prior Schalke penalties were converted, top scorer Marc Wilmots stepped up and converted the all-important penalty to bring the trophy back to Gelsenkirchen
