Collecting their 12th Bundesliga title edging 1 point ahead of FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern would rely on the goal output of Adolfo Valencia and Mehmet Scholl to achieve glory. The next season would be one of domestic disappointment for new coach Giovanni Trapattoni with FC Hollywood languishing in 6th. In continental competition, Bayern would fare much better, reaching the semi-finals after a tough two-legged tie against Swedish outfit IFK Göteborg. After battling to a goalless draw in the first leg of the semi-final against Ajax, FCB could not withstand the attacking force of the Dutch side in the second leg
