Geordie striker Alan Shearer arrived in Blackburn for a then English transfer record-breaking fee of £3.6 million and scored twice on the opening day of the season. An anterior cruciate ligament injury kept him out for the first half of the season but the striker still notched an impressive 16 goals in 21 games. The following season saw Shearer find the back of the net an astonishing 31 times as the Rovers finished runners up in the league
