Away shirt as worn during the 1991-93 period where Ossie Ardiles struggled to add to his young side due to debts at the club, leading to a relegation battle in 1991-92. Ardiles was replaced by Kevin Keegan who kept the club up with a 20th place finish in 1991-92. 1992-93 saw a remarkable improvement under the influential Keegen, with the Magpies sweeping away all competition in Division Two, finishing 8 points clear of 2nd place West Ham to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League
