The Bhoys started the '89-90 campaign well, but a barren second half to the season which saw just two wins in the New Year consigned them to fifth place. Billy McNeill's men would improve to third the year after, securing UEFA Cup qualification on goal difference with Glaswegian goalscorer Tommy Coyne notching 19 times in all competitions
