The side finished in an impressive 4th place in the Bundesliga and played Real Madrid in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup under boss Juup Heynckes in '86. In the following campaign Die Fohlen did even better going on a great run to finish 3rd and reach the UEFA Cup Semi Finals
