As the match entered stoppage time, Manchester United, trailing 1–0, staged a remarkable comeback.
In the 91st minute, Teddy Sheringham equalized, and just two minutes later, Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored the winning goal, securing a 2–1 victory for United. This stunning turnaround not only clinched the Champions League title but also completed an unprecedented treble for Manchester United, as they had already won the Premier League and FA Cup that season.
Liverpool 3-3 Milan - Liverpool win on penalties (2005)
The 2005 UEFA Champions League Final between Liverpool and AC Milan, held at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, is one of greatest comebacks in football history. Milan, boasting a line-up featuring Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo, Kaká, and Andriy Shevchenko, took a commanding 3–0 lead by halftime.
Facing a seemingly insurmountable deficit, Liverpool mounted an extraordinary comeback in the second half. Steven Gerrard ignited the rally with a header in the 54th minute, followed by goals from VladimÃr Å micer and Xabi Alonso within a six-minute span, levelling the match at 3–3. The game proceeded to extra time, where Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek made a remarkable double save to deny Shevchenko. In the ensuing penalty shootout, Dudek's heroics continued, and Liverpool triumphed 3–2, securing their fifth European Cup. This remarkable turnaround has since been dubbed the "Miracle of Istanbul."
Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool (2018)
The 2018 UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Liverpool, held on May 26 at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv. The match began with high expectations, featuring two of Europe's most storied clubs. Liverpool's hopes suffered a blow when Mohamed Salah was forced off due to a shoulder injury following a challenge with Sergio Ramos. The first goal came in the 51st minute when Real Madrid's Karim Benzema capitalized on a misjudged throw by Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, deflecting the ball into the net. Liverpool responded swiftly, equalizing in the 55th minute through Sadio Mané.
The defining moment arrived in the 64th minute. Gareth Bale, having just entered the match, met Marcelo's cross with an audacious overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area. The ball soared past a stunned Karius into the top corner, leaving spectators and players alike in awe. This goal is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever scored in a Champions League final. Bale later added a second goal in the 83rd minute, a long-range effort that slipped through Karius's hands, sealing a 3–1 victory for Real Madrid. This triumph marked Real Madrid's third consecutive Champions League title and their 13th overall.
