Notes - Home shirt as worn by Messi in the 2019-20 season. Going into the season Barça were hoping to make it three league titles in a row and by January they were top of the table on goal difference. But the Barcelona hierarchy made the controversial decision to sack Ernesto Valverde and replace him with Quique Setien this ultimately ended up being a disastrous decision as the club started dropping points, losing to Valencia at home and at Real Madrid making it the first time they had lost away to Real in the league since 2015. Things didn't get much better after the three-month-long hiatus because of Covid-19 including the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern in the champions league semi-final. Messi did however score his 700th career goal
