Notes - Very rare player shirt believed to have been issued to Bender for the friendly fixture against Sunderland, played at the Cash Point Arena in Austria on 5th August 2016. This was the first ever game between the two sides and was decidedly more evenly matched than the fixture first appeared on paper. Die Borussen opened the scoring inside 20 minutes with a well placed strike from Turkish international Nuri Şahin. However, a header from Ivorian Lamine Koné midway through the second half stole a share of the spoils for Dortmund's Premier League opponents, final score 1-1. Bender didn't feature in this fixture, the defensive utility man struggled for game time this season making just 8 appearances as the side finished 3rd in the Bundesliga but claimed their fourth DFB Pokal title as consolation. This was to be his last season at the club leaving in July 2017 after 8 years with Dortmund in which he helped the side to 2 league titles. He joined Levekusen and reunited with twin brother Lars with whom he last played with at 1860 Munich way back in 2009.
