Nedvěd, referred to as "Czech Fury" in the Italian media, came out of retirement for the 2006 World Cup after being persuaded by team coach Karel Brückner. Despite suffering a knee injury in June, Nedvěd was still able to participate in the tournament as the Czechs started brightly with a 3-0 win over USA. However, they quickly fell back down to earth with 2-0 losses against both Italy and Ghana. After the tournament, Nedvěd again announced his retirement from international football, ending his career with 18 goals in 91 appearances for his country
