Arsenal had progressed to the 5th Round after defeating Liverpool and Bolton and the match unexpectedly went on to finish 0-0 with both teams having to face up again 11 days after. McCarthy scored the winner in the 87th minute and Arsenal went out a few days after also having lost the Carling Cup Final to Chelsea. Aliadiere played 90 minutes on the first game and would make 23 appearances in his last year belonging to Arsenal after having gone on loan three times since he joined them in 2001.
