This was the first game of the season, with Spurs coming out on top with a 2-0 victory after an own goal from Andy Griffin moments before half time and a typically clinical finish from Defoe in the 64th minute. Stefanović played the full match, after being newly appointed as club captain, and went on to make 31 appearances across the season as the side narrowly avoided relegation by winning at Wigan on their penultimate game of the season. The Serbian defender moved to Fratton Park in 2003, playing over 120 games until he moved to Fulham in 2007. He was also capped 23 times by the national team
