Notes - Extremely rare player shirt believed to have been prepared for Gomes for the Champions League Group D match against Manchester United played at Estádio da Luz, Lisboa on 7th December 2005. This was the final group match of the competition for the sides, having already faced each other in Manchester where United won 2-1 thanks to a late van Nistelrooy winner. Águias knew they if they won this final group match, then they would reach the knockout stage. The Portuguese champions managed to handle that pressure, despite going 1-0 down after 6 minutes when Scholes scrambled in from a Gary Neville cross, going on to win 2-1. Géovanni levelled things 10 minutes later, before Beto scored what turned out to be the winner in the 34th minute. Gomes played the full match up front, but he opted to wear a short-sleeved shirt, whilst this shirt was prepared as a spare. The Portuguese striker featured 8 times in the tournament this season, as the side progressed to the Round of 16 where they famously beat Liverpool, before losing out to eventual winners Barcelona in the Quarter-Finals. Gomes spent 12 years at the Estádio da Luz over 2 spells, racking up 166 goals in 399 games, whilst also representing Boavista, Fiorentina, Braga and Blackburn Rovers. He earned his first call up for Portual in 1996, going on to score 26 goals in 79 caps, until retiring in 2011
