Notes - Ultra rare player shirt believed to have been worn by Balakov in the 2004 European Championship Qualification Group 3 match against Belgium at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on 7th September 2002. This was the first match of the qualification group stage and the Bulgarians were placed in a tough pool containing Croatia and Belgium. The game started well for Bulgaria with midfielder Zoran Janković slotting home from close range early on thanks to a well timed through ball from Wolfsburg midfielder Martin Petrov. Georgi Peev rattled the bar as the visitors looked to extend their lead, before Bulgaria legend Stiliyan Petrov's free-kick crept past Geert De Vlieger in the Belgian goal. The game ended 2-0 and the result proved to be a crucial one as Group 3 went right down the wire, Bulgaria topped the group just one point ahead of Croatia and Belgium. Balakov played the full 90 minutes and featured in Bulgaria's opening 4 qualification matches scoring once against Andora. He called time on his international career after securing a place at Euro 2004, he made 94 appearances, scoring 16 goals between 1988-2003. The former Sporting Lisbon man saw out one final season in Baden-Württemberg with his beloved Stuttgart where he was well revered as a fan favourite and all round club legend. Balakov was appointed as manager of the Bulgaria national team in 2019
