The match finished 3-1 to the hosts who went ahead just before the half hour mark with a goal from Martin Petrov. Bremen were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half time as Charisteas received his marching orders. Die Wölfe took full advantage of the extra man as they doubled their lead through Ponte 10 minutes after the break. Micoud gave Bremen a lifeline a few minutes later before Effenberg sealed the game for the hosts in the 84th minute. Marić was an unused substitute for this game, but did feature 29 times in his final season for the club, scoring 12 goals as the side finished 8th. The Croatian moved to Wolfsburg in 2000, making the step up from Stuttgarter Kickers in 2. Bundesliga, where he went on to spend 3 years before moving to Gladbach. The striker also earned 9 caps for Croatia, with all of them coming during the 2002-03 period
