This was the first meeting between the sides this season and it was a colossal victory for the Blues running out 4-0 winners over their Merseyside opponents with goals from Le Saux, Hasselbaink, Dalla Bona and Eiður Guðjohnsen. Zenden started on the bench but came on in the 89th minute just moments before Guðjohnsen's goal. This was the Dutchman's first season at the club after transferring from Barcelona in the summer of 2001, the former PSV man made 32 appearances in all competitions for the side this season as they finished 6th in the League. Highlights for the winger this season included a goal against Newcastle on his Premiership debut, and goals in wins over Bolton and Middlesbrough.
