The side qualified after winning the UEFA European U-21's Championship earlier in the year, with the other top four placed teams of Czech Republic, Spain and Slovakia also making up the European contingent. Italy finished top of a group containing Nigeria, Honduras and Australia, beating the latter teams and drawing with Nigeria. They were then drawn against Spain in the Quarter-Finals, which saw them lose out in the 86th minute after a Gabri goal settled a tight match, Margiotta was involved in all four matches, starting the game against Nigeria, whilst being introduced as a second half sub in the other three games. The striker never played for the senior side, and in 2004, under new FIFA legislation, opted to switch his nationality to Venezuela, the country of his birth.
