The sides were locked in a stalemate after a 0-0 draw at Estádio das Antas. Here on Merseyside it was the hosts who finally broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark through Murphy. Star striker Michael Owen made it two shortly afterwards to give Dragões a mammoth task in the second half. Boss Fernando Santos sent on three attack-minded players but the side were unable to break the home teams resolve and exited the competition at this stage. Espinha was given a chance in this game which would be one of the three matches he played in two seasons at the Estádio do Dragão.
