Zagreb made it past Celtic to qualify for the group stages of the competition but after drawing with Ajax in their opening game they had lost to Olympiakos and Porto. Things looked more promising though after beating Porto at Maksimir and the side built on that here with a superb result in Amsterdam. Šimić came off the bench to score the winner himself in the 67th minute. The brother of captain Dario the youngster was too hot to handle and showed great composure to lob a stranded Edwin van der Sar. Velimir Zajec's men drew their final game to finish 2nd place in the group. Other stars from this impressive Zagreb side included Mark Viduka, Silvio Maric and captain Igor Biscan. The team was broken up after this campaign though and Šimić went to Club Brugge in 2000 winning 7 caps for Croatia between 99-00
