The first leg in Spain saw Ebbe Sand give the Danish side a 1-0 lead in the tie, leaving Tenerife with it all to do in the return fixture. Pinilla came on in the 72nd minute to try and salvage the game for the hosts but was unable to do so, however he was selected from the start in this match as part of an attacking side. He played the full match and extra time, with his goal in the 21st minute tie the contest. Tenerife went on to snatch victory in dramatic style when the match seemed to be heading to penalties before Antonio Mata fired in a bending free-kick in the 119th minute. The result set up a Semi-Final tie against Schalke, but lost out to the eventual winners 2-1 on aggregate, despite winning the first leg 1-0. Pinilla joined Tenerife in 1993 after coming through the ranks at Barcelona, going on to spend 7 season with in the Canary Islands where he played over 150 matches and scored 30 goals
