Belgium had beaten Armenia in their opening game and went ahead here thanks to a Degryse header. The holders of the European Championship battled back though and went on to win 3-1 with goals from Vilfort, Jensen and Strudal. Belgium, who had qualified for the last four World Cup finals went on to be disappointed again in their bid to reach the Euros finals for the first time since 1984. Smidts played the full match, the wing-back played the bulk of his career with Belgiumj's oldest club Royal Antwerp and earned 33 caps in total for his country between 1992-97 scoring once.
