This tournament was arrange for teams competing in the second-tier of football - First Division in England and Serie B in Italy. Stoke were drawn in a group alongside Derby, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Ancona, Piacenza, Cesena and Udinese, but each team only played 4 matches all of them against teams from the opposite country. This was the Potters 3rd match, having beaten Cesena 2-0 and drawn 1-1 with Ancona, and they produced an impressive display as they recorded a 3-1 victory with Downing, Biggins and Butler getting on the scoresheet. They went on to top the group as they thumped Piacenza 4-0 in their final match. However, they lost out in the Semi-Finals where they faced eventual winners Notts County, the tie was played over 2 legs and both games finished 0-0 before Stoke lost out 3-2 on penalties. Gleghorn joined the Potters in 1992, helping them to win the Second Division title in his first season, whilst going on to feature over 200 times for the side until he left in 1996
