This was Witschge's first season in France after signing from Ajax the midfielder made 43 appearances in all competitions and was the side's top scorer with 12 goals as ASSE battled to a 15th place finish in Division 1. St Etienne beat Angoulême, Chaumont, Valenciennes after extra time and Mulhouse on penalties to reach the Semi Finals of the Coupe de France in this campaign. There they were defeated by Eric Cantona who scored the only goal for Montpellier at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. The side wore this RTL sponsored Adidas design in all of the rounds up to the Semi's where a Loto Sportif sponsored kit was used. The Holland international Witschge spent two years with the club before returning to the Eredivisie with Feyenoord and he went on to represent his country at Euro 92 and the 1994 World Cup
